It is quite extraordinary when an artist lists their influences as Patti Smith, Fleetwood Mac, Nine Inch Nails, Jeff Buckley and Led Zeppelin (quite an eclectic mix) and avoids sounding like any of them! Tallulah Rendall is that artist, not only that but she is also unique in both sound and style today. Hailing from London, Tallulah has made a huge impression on the music scene following acclaimed performances at Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party and Dame Shirley Bassey’s 70th Birthday Party (the only musical performer to do so!). Her voice is enchanting and haunting, effortless and soulful, and the song is pretty good too! ‘Lay Me Down’ is the first single release from the forthcoming studio album ‘Libellus’. The song begins with a relatively familiar tune, sounding not unlike Nick Drake (slightly contradicting my opening gambit, but it really is only the introduction then she is all her own artist!). The backing track reduces to a minimal piano introducing Tallulah’s unmistakable voice. The song is pretty good, certainly not a classic, but it is her voice and the way in which she articulates every word that really captures you. Tallulah is a rare bird, and a rising talent, ‘rising up’ against the mainstream music in 2008.
Anyone looking for something that little bit different in a female artist should check out Tallulah, if you are lucky enough to be in Berlin on 6th December 2008 go see her at the CafĂ© Zapata! Frankly, I can’t wait to hear more from Tallulah and her timeless, effortless voice, roll on ‘Libellus’.
